The Atari 5200 featured a joystick design which was completely redesigned when compared with
earlier Atari systems including the Atari 2600 and Atari 400/800 computers. It included an analog stick
allowing for 360° of movement along with two fire buttons (located on both the left and right sides of the controller),
a 12 button keypad, and 'Start', 'Pause', and 'Reset' buttons (which were unique features at the time).
The Atari 5200 joysticks are often considered a weak point of the system. The analog stick design does not self center making many games difficult to play. All of the buttons were made of a soft rubber which both wore out easily and could be difficult to operate. The internal mechanical and circuit system was unreliable and frequently needed to be repaired. Alternatives included third party joysticks, such as those from Wico, or for some games Atari's Trak-Ball controller.
