The Commodore 128 could be connected to either a composite monitor or t.v. (40-column), or a digital RGBi monitor (80-column). The display capabilities available depended on which monitor was in use. With an RGBi monitor, 80-columns of text with 16 colors were available. While the it was possible to customize the characters for limited graphical capabilities, other graphics features from the Commodore 64 such as the bitmapped modes and sprites were not available.
Some monitors, such as the Commodore 1902, accepted both composite and digital inputs and allowed the user to switch between the two making all of the Commodore 128's display capabilities available.
