Starting with the Amstrad PC-1512 in 1986, Amstrad released several computers that were compatible with the IBM PC. They featured built in graphics that were compatible with CGA, but also added an additional 640x200 16 color video mode. The additional 16 color video mode was incompatible with other 16 color standards of the time such as EGA or the Tandy/PCjr. These machines were popular in the UK, but failed to gain market share in the US.
