The IBM CGA card could be connected to either an RGB monitor or a composite monitor or TV. Use of a black & white T.V. or monitor was supported, and the CGA card had the ability to enable or disable the color burst signal to better support different composite displays. Changing this setting had no visible effect if you were using an RGB display, you would still see a color image; on composite displays disabling the setting changed the image to grayscale. Some games supported a grayscale setting to provide a better image for users with a black & white display.
