The Yamaha FB-01 FM Sound Generator is an FM synthesizer module introduced in 1986. It is based on the YM2164, a four operator FM synthesizer chip. It could play up to 8 sounds at a time with each sound being able to be set to a different timbre and panned left, right, or center for stereo effects. It included 240 instruments built in with the ability to store an additional 96 user customizable sounds. Since the FB-01 is an external module, when being used with games it would need to be connected to the computer via a MIDI interface such as the Roland MPU-401.
